Treats and Chews

Lowchen are a small breed and thus have tiny tummies! We love soft, high value treats for training. Some lowchen are fine using kibble as training treats, but often this becomes undesirable in more distracting locations such as classes, breweries, etc. For chews, we find that pig hooves, ears, trachea, knees, and collagen braids/rolls satisfy their need to chew, last a long time, and taste great!

Our Favorite Treats

Happy Howie's Meat Rolls
A favorite of trainers everywhere! These are very stinky/delicious to dogs, soft, do not crumble, and tend to stay medium-high value forever. We love these treats as we can cut them into very tiny squares to not fill their stomachs through a long training class or socialization outing. These are a LOT of bang for the buck but do require refrigeration. I pre-cut mine, separate into freezer bags and freeze the extra. Available on Amazon, most feed stores, otherwise online.

Rawbble
A super high value treat to almost every dog. The chicken tends to crumble, but the other flavors hold up well. This is our favorite freeze dried raw treat and for crumbling over food when dogs are being picky. Its expensive by weight, but lasts a longer time than expected. Bixbie's website sells a sample pack under "sample pack" for $20 with three flavors included. You can buy this in more stores as well.

Boiled Chicken
I boil chicken when on sale, put in freezer bags and freeze. This is a super high value, affordable option.

String Cheese
I cut string cheese into small squares and place in a ziploc. This is a medium value treat for my dogs. It only lasts for that day however.

Premade Treats
I don't use a ton of premade treats as they are extremely expensive. However lowchen tend to love Zukes, Tricky Trainers, and Bill Jac's Little Jacs

Food

We feed our entire pack Purina as we love the care to field testing their food and the results seen in health, coat, and muscle by many many owners of show, sport, and working dogs of all breeds. Our breeding age lowchen are on Purina Pro Plan Sport 30/20 as it is an all life stages food, suitable for pregnancy and lactation. Our puppies are on Purina Pro Plan Development. Our older dogs/rescues are sometimes eating Purina One or also eating Sport 30/20.

That being said, there are many great brands of food that are AAFCO-Compliant. We would never shame owners for their choices in foods its a very personal decision. That being said, we do not personally recommend feeding vegan diets or grain free diets, the latter being linked to Diet-associated dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) due to its inclusion of peas and lentils. Raw diets must be done very carefully as it is very easy to not balance correctly and there are many bacteria safety concerns. If you choose to feed Raw, premade raw diets are your best bet for safe balanced diets.

Supplements

Supplements are not usually "needed" with a properly balanced diet. That being said, probiotics and DHA (usually given through fish oil) are often recommended to be added as they are not stable in kibbles. There is much scientific evidence that gut biome health has a drastic effect on the mental and physical health of both animals and people. DHA is also extremely important for brain and vision function and development, especially in puppies. Studies have shown that dams supplemented with high amounts DHA have puppies who more easily solve puzzles than those fed low or no DHA.

Probiotics
After a massive study on probiotics, only a few contained proper levels of live bacteria. We feed Pro-viable to our pregnant dogs and puppies to assist in both creating and maintaining a health gut flora. Fortiflora was the other brand to have correct levels of beneficial bacteria.

Fish Oil (DHA)

Our dogs tend to be super picky with fish smell, especially if it goes rancid. We have had great success with Grizzly Pet Pollock Oil -our dogs LOVE it.
